Installiamo Firefox 3.5 "Shiretoko" in Ubuntu

Mozilla ha reso disponibile la versione finale di Firefox 3.5, il browser web vittima di mesi di ritardo. Si tratta di un passo avanti decisamente importante per Firefox, grazie a numerose migliorie. La fondazione si è fissata un obiettivo ben preciso: erodere nuove quote di mercato a Internet Explorer e allontanare la sempre più pressante concorrenza dell'amica-nemica Google.

Firefox 3.5 estende il supporto HTML 5 ad elementi audio e video, incluso il supporto nativo a formati open-source come Ogg Theora. Il motore di Javascript (TraceMonkey) è stato migliorato ampiamente, con un visibile miglioramento velocistico nel caricamento della pagine più complesse - sebbene le prime prove indichino una maggiore velocità per Chrome e Safari.

La nuova versione del browser pone le basi per una migliore integrazione tra applicazioni online e offline, integra la possibilità di navigazione privata (senza salvare alcun tipo di dato) e riduce il suo impatto sul sistema, amministrando al meglio l'uso della memoria di sistema.

Il download può essere effettuato da qui. Oltre 3 milioni di persone hanno scaricato il programma, nel momento in cui stiamo scrivendo la notizia. Potete seguire la situazione in tempo reale da questo sito web, suddivisa anche per Stato.

Ovviamente appena uscita non si trova ancora tra i repository ufficiali, quindi per installarlo occorre:

• Modificare la source.lst

Prima di tutto ci creiamo una copia di backup della sources.list nel caso in cui dovessimo commettere qualche errore.

Eseguiamo da terminale:

cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list-backup

• Aprire con il nostro editor di testo la lista dei repository:

$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

e alla fine aggiungere:

• Se usi l'ultima versione di Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope"

E alla fine installiamo firefox 3.5:

$ sudo aptitude install firefox-3.5

Atomix 2004: giochiamo con gli atomi in questo splendido remake, con la grafica rimodernata

Atomix è un gioco per GNOME in cui si devono costruire molecole, da quelle semplici inorganiche fino a quelle organiche complesse, a partire da singoli atomi.

I primi livelli possono erroneamente sembrare semplici, ma la difficoltà aumenta sempre progredendo ai livelli successivi. In tal modo è possibile impiegare parecchi minuti (o addirittura molto di più) per terminare un singolo livello.

Un puzzle game d'eccezione creato dalla Testaware di Volker Stepprath. Si tratta di un remake di uno storico gioco distribuito nel 1990 dalla Thalion Software (quelli di Lionheart) per Amiga, C64, Atari ST e MS-DOS. Un gioco dove l'obbiettivo era quello di assemblare varie molecole seguendo l'indicazione (reale) che veniva visualizzata in un piccolo riquadro durante lo svolgimento del livello.

Comodamente attraverso il nostro mouse potremo spostare gli atomi elementari e dovremo riuscire ad assemblarli in molecole prima che il tempo limite raggiunga lo zero.

Il problema è che potremo muovere gli elementi in qualsiasi direzione ma essi si fermeranno solo contro un ostacolo, che sia un muro oppure un'altro atomo. I primi livelli, che serviranno da tutorial, saranno abbastanza semplici da completare ma andando avanti nel gioco ci troveremo a dover assemblare diverse molecole contemporaneamente e dovremo quindi pianificare con attenzione ogni nostro singolo movimento.

Il remake va oltre la riprogrammazione del classico originale con grafica rimodernata. Esistono infatti due modalità di gioco differenti. Quella demominata "classic" ci ripropone il gameplay del classico della Thalion mentre la modalità "2004" aggiunge ulteriori elementi che complicano ancora di più il gioco ma lo rendono anche più avvincente per i puristi dei puzzle game. +

Pidgin, il noto client di instant-messenger, rilascia la nuova versione 2.5.7

Pidgin (precedentemente noto come Gaim) è un client di instant messaging open source multipiattaforma multiprotocollo. Nelle ultime versioni din Ubuntu lo troviamo già installato di default nel sistema.

Originariamente scritto da Mark Spencer per i sistemi operativi Unix-like, oggi è in grado di "girare" su una varietà di piattaforme, comprendendo Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, SkyOS e il sistema PDA di Trolltech, Qtopia.

Gli sviluppatori di Pidgin hanno separato il codice del nucleo (core) (il quale si occupa di cose come la connessione al network e ai messaggi) dal codice per GUI, il quale controlla come presentare queste azioni all'utente. Ora è dunque possibile scrivere client usando librerie GUI a scelta dello sviluppatore. Il nucleo della libreria prodotta dalla separazione è chiamata libpurple (precedentemente nota come libgaim); questa libreria è già in uso nei client Adium e Proteus, come nel client testuale Finch.

Aggiornamenti raccomandati disponibili per Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope: Compiz, Xorg e Gstreamer

In data odierna sono stati resi pubblici, disponibili per il download, importanti aggiornamenti per l'ultima release di casa Ubuntu: Jaunty Jackalope.

Riguardano Compiz, Gstreamer e Xorg.

Da ricordare che, a partire dell'ultima versione di Ubuntu, la 9.04 gli aggiornamenti non sono più giornalieri (quotidiani) tranne quelli che riguardano la sicurezza.

A questo punto Ubuntu ha stabilito un filtro, riteniamo una mossa giusta, onde evitare trovarti tutti i giorni un bel mucchio di aggiornamenti, senza sapere se era giusto installarli tutti o meno. Alla fine si cliccava su Install e via tutti.

In questo modo si può decidere con più calma se e quanti installare o meno.

Come ottimizzare la tua pagina con PageSpeed, una nuova estensione per Firefox che ci mostra il rendimento di una pagina

Una estensione per Firefox di Mozilla, sviluppata a Mountain View e resa disponibile nel canale Google code. Si chiama Page Speed e si tratta di un tool open source destinato agli sviluppatori, che potranno valutare le performance di una pagina web e ottenere suggerimenti per l’ottimizzazione della stessa.

Per funzionare, Google Page Speed deve essere utilizzata in abbinamento a Firebug, un’altra estensione per Firefox, che consente di ispezionare e modificare codice HTML, CSS e JavaScript di una pagina web direttamente dal browser. Dopo aver scaricato e installato gli add-on, nel menu di Firefox si dovrà selezionare la voce «Strumenti», scegliere «Firebug» e aprirlo. Nella finestra di Firebug si dovrà cliccare sul tasto «Page Speed». A questo punto si potrà iniziare a esaminare la pagina web per valutarne le prestazioni. Basta cliccare sul pulsante «Analyze Performance».

Al termine dell’analisi, Google Page Speed mostrerà un elenco di suggerimenti per ogni elemento che necessita di un intervento al fine di migliorare le prestazioni della pagina esaminata.

Nella schermata presentata da Page Speed, gli sviluppatori troveranno, accanto a ogni voce, un’icona, a seconda della priorità di intervento assegnata dal tool a quel determinato elemento della pagina web in esame. Disponibile anche il pannello Page Speed Activity, che mostra la cronologia di tutte le attività del browser, inclusi gli eventi network e i processi JavaScript.

Installati Firebug PageSpeed procediamo così:

• Aprire Firebug: Strumenti > Firebug > Apri.
• All'interno della finestra di Firebug clicchiamo sullo step Page Speed.
• Entrare nella pagina web ad analizzare e aspettiamo che si carichi completamente. Nella parte inferiore della finestra dovrà comparire la leggenda Terminato (Finish).
• Se vogliamo analizzare una pagina con un video in streaming e non compare lascritta Finish aspettiamo finchè il video non inizia la riproduzione.

• Cliccare in “Analyze performance”. PageSpeed mostrerà l'elenco delle migliori prestazioni (Overall Performance Summary). Attenzione: le pagine non sono elencate in ordine alfetico, bensì secondo la importancia e le priorità di ogni una.

• Así es como se interpretan las puntuaciones:

  Priorità alta: un suggerimento fatto apposta in primo piano. La sua correzione può determinare un notevole beneficio "con poco sforzo" come lo definisce il programma. Cioè il rapporto impegno/miglioramento delle prestazioni è piuttosto alto.
  

  Priorità media: suggerimento che possono rappresentare un miglioramento nelle prestazioni ma non al livello della prima.

  Prioridad bassa: suggerimento che si vengono accompagnati dal segno +, probablemente rappresentano un beneficio scarso al implimentarli. Si non hanno nessun segno a fianco significa che funzionano bene così come sono.

  Messaggi d'informazione. Se ci sono troppi messaggi magari hai tentado di eseguire il test prima che la pagina abbia finito di caricarsi.

Le estensioni Mozilla sono piccoli add-on (programmi supplementari) che permettono di aggiungere funzionalità ad alcune applicazioni Mozilla:

* Mozilla Firefox, un browser web
* Mozilla Thunderbird, un client di posta elettronica
* Mozilla Sunbird, un'applicazione per la gestione di calendari
* SeaMonkey, una suite per la navigazione su Internet

Queste estensioni possono essere utilizzate anche con altre applicazioni basate sulla stessa tecnologia:

* Netscape Browser, un browser web

* Nvu, un editor di pagine HTML

Le funzionalità possono andare da una semplice toolbar che consente la ricerca di informazioni su Internet ad una nuova caratteristica più complessa, come può essere quella degli effetti sui singoli tab. Lo scopo principale delle estensioni è, quindi, quello di personalizzare la propria versione delle applicazioni Mozilla.

Le estensioni nel dettaglio

Ogni estensione è costituita da diversi componenti è può essere riferita utilizzando un indirizzo chrome. Essa organizza i suoi contenuti in una struttura di directory ben precisa, nella quale ogni file con una specifica funzionalità va collocato in una particolare directory. Ogni estensione è poi accompagnata da un file RDF di nome install.rdf, che contiene i dati dell'estensione, come il suo ID, la sua versione, il suo autore e la sua compatibilità con l'applicazione Mozilla interessata.

Sviluppo delle estensioni

Grazie alla struttura delle applicazioni Mozilla ed alle loro caratteristiche, le estensioni possono essere scritte e sviluppate da chiunque: per sviluppare un'estensione, infatti, basta conoscere XML User Interface Language (XUL) e Javascript.
La prima operazione da effettuare per sviluppare una propria estensione è quella di utilizzare XUL per definire l'interfaccia grafica della propria estensione e per modificare l'interfaccia dell'applicazione che la ospita. In questo senso, è possibile aggiungere alle applicazioni Mozilla semplici pulsanti, barre di ricerca o, addirittura, interi menù. Risulta chiaro, quindi, come questi prodotti siano altamente personalizzabili.

Una volta definita l'interfaccia grafica della propria estensione, è possibile definire e sviluppare le operazioni che l'utente può effettuare attraverso i controlli dell'interfaccia grafica dell'estensione, utilizzando il linguaggio di scripting Javascript. Con questo linguaggio, che per altro è già molto utilizzato nei siti web, è possibile fare qualsiasi tipo di operazione, dalla ricerca di informazioni all'interazione con un sito web, alla semplice apertura di una pagina del browser.

Una volta completato lo sviluppo della propria estensione è possibile creare un pacchetto installabile (file XPI) per consentire agli altri utenti di utilizzare l'estensione sviluppata.

Come aggiungere PlayDeb ai repository Ubuntu

Playdeb è un repository per Ubuntu che permette in modo molto semplice di installare giochi disponibili su getdeb.net.

Dedicato a tutti quelle che ‘io non installo Linux perchè non posso nemmeno giocarci’

Il progetto PlayDeb non è nient’altro che un repository di giochi per la distribuzione Ubuntu.
Installare giochi su Ubuntu non è mai stato cosi facile! Finalmente un repository creato a posta per i giocatori, e non solo.

L'obbiettivo del nuovo repository Playdeb, è di rendere ancora più facile l'istallazione di giochi che è già possibile trovare su Getdeb.net la cui pecca è però la necessità di installare manualmente i pacchetti scaricati non disponendo di un proprio repository.

Si può scegliere due modi per usufruire di questa opportunità. Per gli utenti più pratici, basta aggiungere il la riga relativa al repository al file di configurazione "/etc/apt/sources.list", mentre per i meno esperti il tutto è pacchettizzato. Dal sito di Playdeb si scarica il pacchetto apturl, che è indispensabile, e il gioco è fatto!

Il nuovo progetto è ancora in versione beta (estetica del portale compresa); il repository, costruito attorno ad Ubuntu Hardy, non è ancora "perfetto", la lista giochi incompleta e il sito sovraccaricato per dirne alcune. Il lavoro è ancora molto ma possiamo ben sperare.


1. Preparing The System For Playdeb
Vai su http://www.playdeb.net, clicca su apturl package e installalo.

Questo pacchettoè necessario per installare i giochi direttamente dal sito di PlayDeb.

Seleziona “Open wish GDepi Package installer” (di default) sulla finestra di firefox.
Se visualizzi questo messaggio :”An older version is available in a software channel” clicca su close e ignora tranquilamente.

Ora clicca su “install Package” e installare apturl:

A questo punto installiamo “playdeb package” seguedo la stessa procera fatta per apturl.



Ora possiamo iniziare ad installare giochi dal repository di Playdeb.

2. Intallazione dei Games
Ci sono 2 modi per installare i giochi usando Playdeb. Il primo direttamente dal sito e il secondo usando Synaptic Package Manager.

2.1 installazione dei giochi usando Playdeb Web Site
Andiamo semplicemente sulla lista dei giochi playdeb e clicchiamo sopra al gioco che ci interessa installare seguendo le indicazioni a monitor.

Ad installazione terminata andiamo semplicemente su Applications > Games e troveremo il gioco appena installato :).

2.2 Installazione dei giochi usando Synaptic Package Manager
Si va su System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager:

In Synaptic Package Manager, si clicca su Search e inseriamo il nome del gioco che vogliamo installare

Se synaptic ha trovato il packgage del gioco, clicchiamo sulla checkbox per marcarlo che ci interessa installarlo

A questo punto veranno verificate le dipendenze.
Poi cliccando su APPLY le dipendenze saranno scaricate e il gioco installato.

Come prima su Applications > Games trovere il gioco installato.

Come aggiungere GetDeb ai repository di Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope

Ormai tutti conoscono GetDeb e lo visitano come una vetrina di lusso alla ricerca dei pacchetti più introvabili e aggiornati.

Possiamo dire che Getdeb è un portale che permette il download di programmi compilati in formato .deb.

Tale formato è facile da installare in distribuzioni Linux come Debian o Ubuntu. Questo risulta utile per gli utenti non troppo esperti, che vogliono evitare di dover compilare le ultime versioni dei programmi. Tutte le applicazioni disponibili sono di codice aperto organizate in 32 e 64 bit.

La domanda, semplice ed elementare, è questa: perchè scaricare a mano pacchetto per pacchetto quando noi Linuxiani abbiamo il vantaggio di avere un sistema costruito su pacchetti software ?

Fortunatamente i ragazzi di ubuntu.org.ua se lo sono chiesti prima di me e hanno creato un comodo repository contenente tutto il software di GetDeb.

Nel sito Getdeb troverete tutte le nuove uscite software per ubuntu.

Io ne ho approfittato per aggiornare per esempio GIMP.

Oltre che scaricare e installare pacchetti da qui si può optare di inserire repository cosi saranno disponibili da synaptic o da terminale.

Quindi aggiorniamo il sources.list da Terminale

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

alla fine file inseriamo

## GetDeb repository : http://www.getdeb.net/
deb http://ubuntu.org.ua/ getdeb/

oppure usate il minor

deb http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/ getdeb/

Salvate

Fatto questo ora verifichiamo aggiornamenti:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Un mio consiglio è usare repository Getdeb sole in certe occasioni come per esempio nel mio caso per aggiornare GIMP, scaricando solo i file da sito non mi consentiva di installarlo. Getdeb non è allineato con Canonical quindi qualche pacchetto potrebbe presentare problemi.

Per celebrare il rilascio di Galileo Eclipse organizza il DemoCamps

Dal 18 maggio al 29 giugno, la comunità di Eclipse invita ad organizzare e partecipare a Eclipse DemoCamps in tutto il mondo per celebrare il rilascio di Galileo, previsto ufficialmente per il 26 di questo mese.

E' stata appena rilasciata la RC2 Test.

L'Eclipse DemoCamps è l'occasione per mostrare al mondo l' interessante sviluppo tecnologico in fase di realizzazione da parte della comunità Eclipse.

Non è necessario essere uno sviluppatore di software per partecipare.
Eclipse è un progetto open source legato alla creazione e allo sviluppo di una piattaforma di sviluppo ideata da un consorzio di grandi società quali Ericsson, HP, IBM, Intel, MontaVista Software, QNX, SAP e Serena Software, chiamato Eclipse Foundation, e creata da una comunità strutturata sullo stile dell'open source.

Pur essendo orientata allo sviluppo del progetto stesso, questo IDE (ambiente di sviluppo integrato) è utilizzato anche per la produzione di software di vario genere. Si passa infatti da un completo IDE per il linguaggio Java (JDT, "Java Development Tools") ad un ambiente di sviluppo per il linguaggio C++ (CDT, "C/C++ Development Tools") e a plug-in che permettono di gestire XML, PHP e persino di progettare graficamente una GUI per un'applicazione JAVA (Eclipse VE, "Visual Editor"), rendendo di fatto Eclipse un ambiente RAD.

Il programma è scritto in linguaggio Java, ma anziché basare la sua GUI su Swing, il toolkit grafico di Sun Microsystems, si appoggia a SWT, librerie di nuova concezione che conferiscono ad Eclipse una straordinaria reattività.

La piattaforma di sviluppo è incentrata sull'uso di plug-in, delle componenti software ideate per uno specifico scopo, per esempio la generazione di diagrammi UML, ed in effetti tutta la piattaforma è un insieme di plug-in, versione base compresa, e chiunque può sviluppare e modificare i vari plug-in. Nella versione base è possibile programmare in Java, usufruendo di comode funzioni di aiuto quali: completamento automatico ("Code completion"), suggerimento dei tipi di parametri dei metodi, possibilià di accesso diretto a CVS e riscrittura automatica del codice (funzionalità questa detta di Refactoring) in caso di cambiamenti nelle classi.

Essendo scritto in Java, Eclipse è disponibile per le piattaforme Linux, HP-UX, AIX, Mac OS X e Windows.

Storia

La Eclipse Foundation è una organizzazione attualmente non-profit fondata nel 2001 da società come Borland, IBM, Red Hat e SUSE, oltre ad altre. Nel corso degli anni i colossi industriali che hanno deciso di partecipare al progetto sono aumentati, includendo anche HP e Fujitsu ad esempio.

La licenza di riferimento per Eclipse è la Common Public License, che permette di creare prodotti derivati ridistribuibili gratuitamente.
