o GStreamer
o xine-lib
o Media Application Server (MAS).
o Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM)
* Possibilità di masterizzare i CD grazie al supporto integrato per k3b.
* Icona animata nella barra di sistema (opzionale).
* Supporto KIO per GStreamer consente di controllare la riproduzione da remoto.
* Supporto nativo per Audioscrobbler: playlist dinamiche possono essere generate da Last.fm.
* Supporto per iPod integrato.
* Interfaccia di scripting potente che consente di espandere Amarok tramite qualsiasi linguaggio DCOP.
* Testi delle canzoni scaricati in automatico e mostrati su tab.
* Equalizzatore grafico a 10 bande
* Supporto per Podcasting
* Mostra informazioni sugli artisti prendendole dagli articoli di Wikipedia

Software Packages in Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope", Categorìa Librerie Perl, seconda parte

Software Packages in Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope", Categorìa Librerie Perl, prima parte

Anyevent-perl provide framework for multiple event loops

Event: RPC consists of a server and a client library. The server exports a list of classes and methods, which are allowed to be called over the network. More specific it acts as a proxy for objects created on the server side (on demand of the connected clients) which handles client side methods calls with transport of method arguments and return values.

The object proxy handles refcounting and destruction of objects created by clients properly. Objects as method parameters and return values are handled as well (although with some limitations, see below).

sudo apt-get install unrar

Qualche F.A.Q.:

What is a RAR file and how do to open RAR files?
A RAR archive is a "collection of files". Compression is used to make the archive file size smaller. A RAR archive is something like a ZIP archive, but the compression is usually better. The program WinRAR can create and extract RAR archives. For further information please visit the official RAR homepage.
If you want to extract ("open", "read") RAR archives, you may use a tool like WinRAR, WinZIP the free Aladdin Expander. These tools can be found at http://www.download.com.

What is a URARFileLib?
The URARFileLib (short name for UniquE RAR File Library, also called unrarlib) is a free library for C programmers to access RAR archives.

There is no way to create a RAR archive with the URARFileLib. When will you add a "create archive" function?
Probably never. The license of the free unrar source code prohibits making a tool that can create RAR compatible archives. Eugene Roshal spent a lot of time making RAR what it is today and RAR helps him to earn his livelihood. If you really need to create RAR archives form your application, I suggest contacting the author of RAR.

Which version of WinRAR should I use to create the RAR archives?
Currently, only the RAR 2.0 archive format is supported. Use WinRAR v2.9 (RAR 3.0 is introducing new compression algorithms which are not implemented yet). If you don't have this version of WinRAR, you can get it here.

Do you know that the license for the unrar sources from RARLab is not compatible with the GNU Public license?
Yes, this is true. But we have the permission from Eugene Roshal to release unrarlib 0.4.0 under GPL and unrarlib-license. Note: this doen't mean that RAR is free now or you can use the unrar source from RARlabs under GPL. You are just allowed to use UniquE RAR File Library version 0.4.0 (unrarlib 0.4.0) under GPL.

What about RAR 3 support?

RAR3 support is not scheduled. It would imply problems with the GPL license (RAR3 features a PPM based compression algorithm developed by Dmitry Shkarin plus some code by Eugeny Roshal).
If you need RAR3 support, check ftp.rarlabs.com for the original unrar source code and extract the needed code yourself.
Windows developers may have a look at Sebastian Schuberth's "arch::ifstream" library (requires the unrar.dll).

If YOU added RAR3 support and would like to share it with the 2000 monthly visitors of this page, so please let me know.

Update (12/2005): valuable hint by Jordi Burguet Castell: "Incidentally, I could get the source from ftp://ftp.rarlabs.com/rar/unrarsrc-3.5.4.tar.gz and easily compiled it with "make -f makefile.unix" as explained there (my system is a Debian unstable i386). Now I can finally unrar some rar3 files I had, which is what I really needed! Probably it is evident, but I thought it wasn't going to work.".

Guida all'installazione

.

Changelog
Build 14 (until now)
  • Improved computer player behaviour (many different svn rev.)
  • Throw out the bundled version of scons. Scons is widely available by now and the bundled version caused more trouble than it was worth: many incompati- bilities, where a distro-supplied version would have worked (r3929)
  • Fix bug #2351257 - wrong game tips are shown. (r3809)
  • Some improvements of tribes economy and soldier balance (r3793, r3796)
  • Added third barbarian campaign (r3790) and improved the already existing ones (r3775, r3788)
  • Added a new trigger for scenario maps: Player defeated (r3789)
  • In the editor save dialog; initialize the name box with the map name and do not react (for example by playing a sound) to clicks in the empty area below the last file in the listbox (affects all listboxes in the UI). (r3783)
  • Fix bug in build13 that the editor save dialog would use the name of the list item from the second last (instead of the last) click. (r3781)
  • Added an editor tool to set a new origin in the map. This will make it possible to get an island properly centered, instead of divided in 4 corners when a minimap is generated with an external tool, such as the one used in the map download section. The button that enables the tool is in the map options dialog. (r3778)
  • Allow longer text for a world's name and author (to avoid having it cut off like "The Widelands Development Tea"). (r3777)
  • Do not crash when writing an empty file. (r3773)
  • Added two new in game and one new menu song. (r3758, r3800)
  • Make more configuration options configurable in the options menu. (r2753)
  • Fix bugs in the S2 map loader. Trying to load an invalid file could cause failed assertions in debug builds and probably other bugs in release builds. (r3750)
  • Added new loading screens for winterland and for barbarian campaigns. (r3748, svn:3797)
  • Allow configuring which information about a building is shown in the mapview's building census and statistics displays and the building window title. (r3741)
  • Added colorized chatmessages. (r3725)
  • Added a lobby to multiplayer launchgame menu. Now players aren't automatically assigned to a position. Players staying in lobby are getting in game spectators.(r3702, r3703, r3707, r3709, r3710)
  • Improved the map Plateau so that the players can reach the center even if another player is fortified there. This is achieved by allowing large buildings at a few more places in the valleys leading from the starting positions to the center. Also add some wiese1 (terrain type), which was not used at all on this map before. (r3713)
  • Added a new map "Twinkling Waves". (r3689)
  • Fix bug that the editor toolsize menu was not updated when the toolsize was changed with the keyboard shortcuts. (r3675)
  • Implement feature request #1792180 - Allow user to change starting-position. (r3666, r3667, r3668)
  • Editboxes now support UTF8 (unicode) characters, so the players can use their locale language in game. (r3662)
  • Improve the output of widelands --help. (r3660)
  • Add a new terrain type, corresponding to Greenland's bergwiese, to Desert. (r3659)
  • Workers that search for an object now prefer one of the nearest. Therefore they spend less time walking and more time harvesting. (r3658)
  • Fix bug that in the military-/trainingsite windows, the name (untranslated) of the soldier type was shown instead of the descname (translated). (r3645)
  • Fix bug that in the trainingsite window, the ware priority buttons were not updated. (r3642)
  • Fix bug that in the trainingsite window, the column total level was not sorted correctly for 2-digit values (10 was sorted between 1 and 2). (r3641)
  • Fix bug that when the user typed in the editor's map description input fields, the world was reparsed on every keystroke, which caused a delay. (r3640)

  • Fix bug that when the loading of a tribe failed, the error message was insufficient. (r3639)
  • Fix bug related to land ownership and military influence when a soldier arrived to a trainingsite. (r3701)
  • Fix bug related to land ownership and military influence when an event_building was executed. (r3636, r3637)
  • Fix bug that when a _pc-file was missing for an animation frame, the program did not make it clear that it was the _pc-file that was missing (the user was lead to think that it was the main file of the animation frame). (r3623)
  • Fix bugs in the maps Mystical Maze and Three Warriors: update tribe name to atlanteans. (r3609, r3612)
  • Change the Atlantean Weaponsmithy's program Produce Light Trident to consume iron (in addition to planks). This makes it necessary to mine iron ore to produce soldiers, which makes it more difficult to win against the other tribes (who also require iron for making soldiers) (r3718)
  • Fix bug in build13 that the Atlantean Labyrinth's program Upgrade Evade 1 could consume bread and then fail. (r3714)
  • Add demand check to Cloth production in Empire Weaving Mill. (r3604)
  • Add a program that produces an axe to the Barbarian Metalworks. (r3717)
  • Simplify the stoppability rules of building types. Only productionsites are stoppable. A productionsite type is a stoppable if and only if it is not a militarysite type. Get rid of the config option to make a building type stoppable (many building types had "stopable=yes" in their conf-file). Also get rid of the config options to set custom stop/continue icons for each building type (this was not used in any of the building types that are included in the Widelands releases). It is no longer possible to stop a constructionsite so that the finished building will be set to stopped. (r3723)
  • Get rid of event numbers in event chains. This removes the maximum limit of 99 events in an EventChain. It also makes diffs much smaller when an event is inserted, because now the following events do not need to be renumbered. (r3600)
  • For the statistics string of a trainingsite (shown in the mapview near the trainingsite when S has been pressed), replace strings like "upgrade_evade_0" (untranslated) with strings like "Upgrade evade 0" (translated). (r3595)
  • Fix bug that requests saved internal index numbers instead of ware/worker type names. The internal index numbers may not be the same when the game is loaded again, while type names should be the same. (r3593)
  • Implement automatic recursive road removal. When a player holds down Ctrl when ordering (or confirming, if applicable) the removal of flag or road, do a recursive removal. If a road removal command is given with the recursive option, all roads between the start and end flags are removed. Then those flags that become dead ends are removed recursively. A flag is a dead end if it does not have a building and roads to at most 1 other flag. (r3591)
  • Make immovable animation times random. (r3635)
  • Implement natural reproduction for trees. Instead of just growing up and then idling forever, they seed new trees and eventually die. Dead trees disappear after a while. Different tree species have different advantages on different terrain types (only for Greenland). This makes it possible for several tree species to survive by occupying different niches. Increase the working radius of woodcutters/lumberjacks from 8 to 10. This makes it easier to cover large areas with a few of them. This is now recommended to keep an area clear of trees. (r3591, r3610)
  • Forbid immovable programs to have transform commands that replace an immovable with one of the same type. (r3647)
  • Get rid of line numbers in immovable programs. (r3591)
  • In the worker list window of productionsites; if a worker is missing, show "(vacant)" if the request for it is open and "(coming)" if the request is in transfer. (r3591)
  • Create a few different player initializations and allow choosing one for each player when the game is configured. The default initialization is a headquarters with the usual set of wares/workers/soldiers, so the default behaviour is unchanged. There is another player initialization called castle_village that creates a castle (or citadell, depending on tribe) and a village around it with a warehouse loaded with some wares/workers/soldiers and some basic production and training buildings. (r3629)
  • Do not automatically create a headquarters for each player in scenarios. This must now be done explicitly with events. Change the existing scenarios accordingly (and use new headquarter graphics in some of them). (r3591, r3617, r3737)
  • Implemented logic for finding a suitable location for a building that will be created with an event. (r3629)
  • When a warehouse is created through an event, allow configuring exactly how many of each type of ware, worker and soldier that should be created with the warehouse. (r3591)
  • When a productionsite is created through an event, allow configuring exactly which of the wares and workers that should be created with the productionsite. (r3591, r3630)
  • When a military-/trainingsite is created through an event, allow configuring exactly how many soldiers at each combination of strength levels that should be created with the site. (r3628, r3629)
  • The builder does no longer enter the building and see the surroundings for a moment when he has completed the construction. Instead he leaves directly. (r3590)
  • Added new portrait pictures for the campaign maps (r3581, r3632)
  • Allow multiple AI implementations (r3574)
  • Implement a debug console and add a "switchplayer" command (r3573)
  • Fix bug that the back buttons in the campaign selection UI had the wrong background. (r3619)
  • Improvements of full screen menu UI (r3579, r3581)
    • Make fullscreen menus dynamic resizable. Now the menus use the same resolution as the whole game. Still the resolution must be saved in the config, so it's not yet possible to resize via mouse.
    • Clean up menu design, make some menus more straight and intuitive and follow the same alignment in similar menus.
    • Add note to intro screen, so players aren't confused anymore, whether widelands is still loading.
    • Introduce config option and commandline argument "ui_font". This option allows the user, to use a different font in the fullscreen menus, which can be quite important if the resolution is very low and the serif font is nearly unreadable. Besides a path to a TTF file relative to /fonts/ the values "sans" and "serif" are accepted. If an invalid argument was given Widelands falls back to UI_FONT_NAME.
  • Made the minimap remember its display options during the session (r3572)
  • Implemented generation of browsable HTML from game data. (r3548)
  • Made it possible to define a default target quantity for a ware type and set target quantities in the game. (r3543)
  • Made Ctrl+S bring up the save game dialog in both gameplay and replay. Added save button in replay watcher. (r3542)
  • Fixed Trigger_Time (and replaced Trigger_Null with it). (r3541).

Linpus Technologies Inc , a local Linux operating system (OS) developer, expects Linux-based netbooks to reach 50 percent market share by next year, on a par with Microsoft Inc’s Windows platform, company general manager Stephen Lim said yesterday.

“More and more chip suppliers such as Texas Instruments Inc and Qualcomm Inc are jumping on the bandwagon to adopt Linux,” Lim told a technology seminar hosted by the Industrial Development Bureau yesterday.

“We are also seeing more and more PCs bundled with Linux from Acer Inc , Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦), Dell Inc and other computer brands,” he added.

As the Linux provider in Asia, the software company is targeting netbooks and affordable all-in-one (AIO) desktops to battle its Windows rival.

Linpus plans to introduce user-friendly interfaces that enable applications and technologies to be developed on its open platform while delivering commercial-level qualified Linux distribution and semi-annual upgrade services, Lim said.

The advantages of using a Linux system include advanced power management, optimized boot and shutdown times, as well as more WiFi and 3G support such as software development kits (SDK) from telecommunication providers, Lim said.

Last year, Windows XP and Vista together took up a 75 percent of the global market share in netbook OS, data from the Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute (MIC, showed.

“The Windows platform isn’t necessarily better, but consumers have a certain familiarity with this OS, hence XP was able to grow so fast on netbooks last year,” Victor Horng , general manager of OSS Integral Institute Co , told the Taipei Times yesterday.

Linpus also sees netbooks becoming the mainstream soon as they encroach on regular notebook sales, with sales estimated to grow 102 percent this year. Sales of regular notebooks is projected to grow 11.3 percent, while sales of desktop computers are expected to drop 0.9 percent, MIC data showed.

Global PC shipments this year are estimated to approach 300 million units, it added.

Earlier this month, Intel Corp and Novell Inc’s collaboration to aggressively push Moblin, a Linux platform, in netbooks demonstrated Intel’s resolve to build a powerful Linux-based ecosystem.

The European Parliament has passed a proposal (571 in favor, 38 against) to treat Internet censorship by national governments as a trade barrier. The proposal was submitted by European Parliament member (MEP) Jules Maaten of the Dutch conservative VVD party. The adopted Maaten amendment calls on the European Commission, “to specifically deal with all restrictions to the provision of Internet and information society services by European companies in third countries as part of its external trade policy and to consider all unnecessary limitations to the provision of those services to be trade barriers.”

The proposal will now pass to the European Council. If adopted as a European Union (EU) law, the proposal could have an impact on future trade negotiations between the EU and governments engaged in Internet censorship. “As the adopted amendment on treating internet censorship as a trade barrier is currently only the wish of the Parliament it is not yet part of EU legislation. We will nonetheless keep on pressuring the European Commission and the Council to formally adopt such a proposal in EU legislation,” Jethro van Hardeveld, the political assistant to Jules Maaten, said in an email.

On November 7th, 2007, a public hearing on “Censorship & cyber-dissidents. Freedom on the internet in authoritarian states” was organized by Jules Maaten and two other MEPs from the Alliance for Liberals And Democrats for Europe (ALDE Group) in Brussels. The hearing included voices from cyber-dissidents from Tunisia and China, Reporters sans frontières (RSF), and the Dutch ISP XS4all, on “the increasing grip of governments in repressive states on the content of the Internet.”

The hearing also called for a European version of the Global Online Freedom Act (PDF) in the United States: “The EU will now have to make supporting journalists and cyber dissidents a priority. Free speech must remain the basis of the Internet. Europe should follow the American example where legislators are working on a Global Online Freedom Act. We urge the European Commission to follow this example and come up with a European version of this Act,” Jules Maaten declared.

In a recent parliamentary question on February 21, 2008, Jules Maaten asked whether the Commission is, “willing to invest 20 million euros in technologies able to develop and distribute anti-censorship tools and services which could help Internet users breach electronic firewalls set up by China, Iran and other closed societies?”

I sent some questions for an interview to MEP Jules Maaten which were answered by his political assistant Jethro van Hardeveld:

Sami: Can you give us a brief background about this Internet anti-censorship proposal?

Jethro van Hardeveld: Since 2006 our office has been active on the issue of internet censorship. We started working on internet censorship with the resolution and debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 2006 on ‘freedom of expression on the internet'. The motivation for working on the issue of online censorship is that free speech must remain the basis of the Internet and that human rights should also be protected online.

Sami: Why this focus on the “great firewall” of China? Does China represent the primary target of this initiative or does it also include all other countries engaged in online censorship - even those commonly described by the EU as “moderate Arab regimes” such as Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, etc.?

Jethro van Hardeveld: The proposal is not focussed at any specific country. It calls on the European Commission to deal with censorship in third countries through it´s external trade policy. It is in no way solemnly directed at China. In a press statement (also attached) from Jules Maaten however we did mention the ‘Great Firewall of China' as it it is a concrete example and one of the most well known cases of censorship.

Sami: The European Union's association agreement with countries like Tunisia explicitly requires them to observe human rights and political freedom, however, the EU did not establish a well-functioning mechanism to address continuing human rights abuses by those governments, so how you will deal with the online censorship? Are we going to see the EU boycotting products or imposing sanctions?

Jethro van Hardeveld: We are calling for the EU to adopt a European version of the American Global Online freedom Act. This EU legislation should cover and deal with online censorship by European internet companies in third countries. This legislation should also contain provisions obliging European internet companies to place their servers in non authoritarian/western states, in order to guarantee that will we not get another ‘Shi Tao' case (the arrests of cyber dissidents ). Furthermore, the European Commission more or the less admitted in an answer to written questions by Jules Maaten that the self regulation in the European internet industry has failed. The European Commission answer: …”the Commission welcomes this clear and unequivocal statement and calls for the industry to work in close cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on a code of conduct to prevent and counteract cyber repression. The Commission regrets that, so far, no progress has been made on this issue.”…
